The College of Software Convergence Presents a Future Model of “Kyung Hee Engineering”

According to the report of World Economic Forum (WEF) on ‘The Future of Jobs’ (2016), between 2015 and 2020 roughly 7.1 million jobs will disappear and two million new jobs will be created

The Fourth Industrial Revolution widely is expected to bring about significant changes in the industrial structure of the world. ‘Kyung Hee Engineering’ has been making various attempts to cope with these changes and to provide education, learning, and research environment required by future society. Through the Future Science Cluster, Kyung Hee has created a new ecosystem of convergence research while pursuing a reorganization of the school system to raise talented individuals who will lead the future. Last year, following the launch of the Department of Software Convergence, the College of Software Convergence was newly established this year.

The new college, which houses the Departments of Computer Engineering and Software Convergence, presents a new educational model of 'Kyung Hee Engineering' including a specialized convergence education. The Department of Software Convergence, which has been in operation since last year, presents a new breed of engineering education for future.

Establishing new convergence tracks including game contents, data science, future automobile, and robot
"Students in the Department of Software Convergence leave the department in the second semester of the first year and take a design thinking subject (required) in the Department of Industrial Design, College of Art and Design. They receive the convergence education while taking major courses in various departments.

This is what Seong-won Lee, Dean of the Department of Software Convergence explained. The students of the department can design their own future and choose the tracks they want to learn, such as game content, data science, future cars and robots by the end of the first grade. If there is no track that a student wants, the student can select a convergence leader track to create a new field of convergence.

The goal of the Department of Software Convergence is 'convergence.' They aim to nurture talented people who are able to work and start a business immediately after graduation by incubating the growth of students’ knowledge and experience in select convergence areas and software development. The Department of Software Convergence plans to design a series of flexible and open-ended tracks starting from four categories: Game Contents Track, Data Science Track, Future Automobile & Robot Track, and Convergence Leader Track

The classes are conducted by 20 professors (18 of them are adjunct professors) who belong to eight departments of five colleges including the Colleges of Software Convergence, Engineering, Electronic & Information, Art & Design, and Humanitas College (International).

New convergence takes place with participation of professors from various departments
The faculty of the Department of Software Convergence was formed on the voluntary base. As professors of various departments have joined, the convergence that has taken place so far is beyond the expectation.

Under the leadership of Professor Jae-yoon Jeong (Department of Industrial & Management Systems Engineering) professors of the Department of Software Convergence opened the Smart Factory graduate course. Smart Factory is a future factory that produces products based on ICT technology. This course will cultivate the tailored talents for our society.

The ‘KHUV,’ an unmanned autonomous vehicle of Kyung Hee University, which successfully completed the driving demonstration in December 2017, is also the result of the collaborative work among the professors from the future automobile & robot track of the Software Convergence Department, proceeded with by Professor Soon-gul Lee (Mechanical Engineering), Professor Dong-han Kim (Electronic Engineering), and Seung-gyu Lee (Computer Engineering).

Seong-won Lee, head of the department, said, "The department was created thanks to professors' commitment to creating a new education model beyond the barrier between departments so that students could prepare for the future.” He then emphasized, “Students should have a passion for creating the future themselves."
